About the company

R1M Motorbike and Moped Training School provides motorcycle and moped training in Cambridgeshire and Suffolk. The school offers Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) and Direct Access Scheme (DAS) courses. Vince offers further training to full licence holders in confidence building, smoother riding, and cornering. Alyson handles phone calls, texts, emails, messages, and booking lessons and tests.

What customers say

Based on genuine customer reviews

Learner riders at various stages, from complete beginners to those returning after long breaks, describe R1M Motorbike and Moped Training School in Ely as a place where confidence is rebuilt and skills are properly developed. Several customers mention the patient, calm instruction they received while working towards CBT, A2 and full A licence qualifications, with lessons adapted to individual pace and previous experience, including car and class 1 drivers new to two wheels. Instructors James and Vince are named repeatedly for explaining techniques clearly and for their encouragement on unfamiliar roads and manoeuvres.

Reviewers also highlight Alyson's role in booking lessons and tests, responding quickly to messages and sending reminders about documentation, sometimes outside normal hours. The school's willingness to fit training around shift patterns and childcare commitments comes up often, as does the use of well-maintained machines. A recurring theme is the personal, family-run feel of the training and the sense that staff go beyond what is expected, whether by arranging last-minute test slots or providing transport to test centres. The result is a consistent account of riders passing their practical assessments and gaining the handling skills needed for larger bikes.

Completed my A License with R1M. Faultless experience with them from start to finish. James is an absolute superstar and a credit to R1M. Patient, friendly & above all incredibly helpful. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend R1M to anyone thinking of doing a CBT or a bigger bike license. Thanks again James, Alyson & Vince. (I will miss the Suzuki dearly)

They have been brilliant from the start. James was my instructor throughout my journey of obtaining my A license, I couldn’t recommend them enough. Very supportive and very knowledgeable, always analysing your riding and to make sure you are at your best ability.

I recently obtained my A2 license with the help from James at R1M and couldn’t be happier! If you or someone you know wants to get their bike license, I would definitely recommend R1M. Throughout my lessons, I was given constant support and encouragement in areas I felt nervous about with riding; trying different roads I’ve never ridden on before as well as given opportunities to work on different manoeuvres that I felt needed it. Additionally, any questions I had were always happily explained in detail when needed. I really enjoyed my lessons with James as I was able to have a laugh with him (which really helped my nerves coming up to my Mod 1 and Mod 2) and still kept that level of professionalism. He was always patience with me even if I was having a rough lesson and felt disheartened; James would always encourage me not to give up and, because of him, I now have my A2 license - I am forever thankful. Alyson was always helpful when it came to booking my lessons and with any questions I had. Vincent was also very supportive and gave me advice when I saw him during my lessons at the unit. In good time, I plan to do my Full A licence, and I do very much plan on returning to R1M to achieve that.

I am a car and class 1 driver that had never ridden a motorbike. I went for my CBT today. I was put on a manual and was apprehensive. Learning the gears and clutch control was a steep learning curve. James the instructor was patient and explained everything to a T. It was frustrating for me as a proffesional driver to feel so out of my depth on the road but again James was calm and let me go at my own pace. I passed but know i have room for improvment but was given the confidence that its not an impossible hurdle. 10/10 great instructor

Well, what can I say ? I was recommended this school for my A licence and from start to finish was an absolute pleasure to deal with firstly Alyson was amazing and so prompt at replying to me regarding my training and booking it all up so top marks for that . I was quite worried when I first turned up as I didn’t know if it would be like an army camp but it was soooo far from it . James was absolutely awesome and is a huge credit to the training school he got me ready in such a short amount of time his training was absolutely incredible and is so knowledgeable put me at ease from the word go , very good bikes to be training on so much so it very nearly prompted me to buy one . I did my mod 1 and 2 the first time and although I have some riding experience I owe that to James as the techniques he’s taught me got me through it . Now a happy rider 100% recommend this school for anyone cbt or full licence 💪🏻👌🏻

Small school with great staff and nice kit, absolutely recommended. I went to R1M to for DAS training. My interractions were mainly with Alyson (for booking lessons and tests) and James (instructor). Alyson is very quick to respond to emails, I even got responses out of hours too. She was very helpful with booking lessons and tests and sent me reminders for things like bringing documentation to the tests. I even got a nice congrats email after passing! James is a great instructor, very patient and thorough, and is more than happy to take the time to properly answer any questions. He's also super friendly and you can have a good laugh with him, even when outon the road with the one way intercom! Mod 1 training is done at the school. I did my test Mod 2 in Cambridge so Mod 2 practice was covering the test areas for the Cambridge test center. James has high training standards, when you get the point of being able to ride around without him picking up on problems, you should have no problem with the test. Vince is usually around the school working on things. He's also friendly and encouraging. He did a couple of mock Mod 1 tests with me to shake things up a bit. For reference, I came to R1M having only done my CBT and had no other motorcycle experience whatsoever, though I had several years of driving experience. The first lesson was transferring to the big bike (a new Suzuki SV650) and starting low speed practice for Mod 1. Then 3x Mod 1 lessons (looking back I think I could have done it in 2. These lessons also included some on-road practice for the ride to the test center) and then the Mod 1 test. After passing Mod 1, I had 2x Mod 2 lessons, after which James was satisfied I was ready for the Mod 2 test. I passed with zero faults. I had a great time at R1M and would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for motorcycle training around Cambridge.
