About the company

Shires Motorcycle Training Peterborough provides motorcycle and scooter training, including CBT, DAS, and Enhanced Rider courses, delivered by DSA qualified instructors. Training bikes include current models from Honda and Kawasaki, such as the 2026 Kawasaki Z125, 2026 Kawasaki Z650, Honda Hornet 750, and Honda CB125F. The CBT course comprises a seven-hour lesson with five hours off-road and at least two hours on-road training.

Bluetooth headsets are used to improve communication during training. The company operates seven days a week in Peterborough. Courses can be tailored to specifications. A cancellation policy requires seven days' notice for CBT and ten working days' notice for other courses. Before training, students must pass an eyesight test by reading a car number plate at 67 feet (20.5 metres) and demonstrate a good understanding of the English language.

What customers say

Based on genuine customer reviews

Direct access training, CBT sessions and full licence preparation make up the main courses run by Shires Motorcycle Training Peterborough from its Second Drove site. Numerous reviewers describe starting with little or no experience on a bike and coming away with a full motorcycle licence after clearing both practical tests on their first attempt, sometimes within a couple of weeks of focused instruction.

Instructors named Jack, Jon, Matt and John come up again and again for breaking manoeuvres into manageable steps and adapting their teaching for anxious or neurodivergent pupils, with calm, unhurried explanation noted as a consistent strength. Gemma is mentioned frequently for organising bookings and theory support and for keeping communication clear from enquiry through to test day. Some riders had moved on from another local provider after a less satisfying CBT and found the steadier, more structured approach here made a real difference.

A few pupils who had struggled with the second practical test elsewhere credit the encouragement and coaching style with helping them succeed at their next sitting. Older learners, those managing old injuries and complete beginners alike describe feeling supported rather than pushed. The centre is open every day of the week, including Sundays until four in the afternoon, allowing sessions to be arranged around work or family life.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 10/10 – Couldn’t recommend Shires Motorcycles enough! Well, well, well… where do I even start? From the moment you walk through the door, you’re greeted by Gemma – an absolute superstar – and her amazing doggo! She was incredibly friendly, informative, and made everything from booking the course to explaining each stage of the training really easy. From my CBT right through to my Mod 2 test, she handled everything smoothly and professionally, making the whole experience that much better. Then came the Mod 1 and Mod 2 training days, where I met Matt, our instructor. What a guy! He’s an incredibly knowledgeable rider, and there genuinely wasn’t a question he couldn’t answer. His teaching style really boosted both mine and the other trainee’s confidence, and he made the whole course memorable for all the right reasons. Every practice ride and mock test was run just like the DVSA would do it, so by the time the real tests came around, we felt fully prepared. At the same time, Matt kept the atmosphere relaxed, with plenty of laughs along the way. It never felt stressful, and you could tell within the first 10 minutes that he has a real passion for teaching people to ride. Thanks to Matt’s top-quality training, we both passed our Mod 1 and Mod 2 first time! I honestly can’t praise him highly enough. If you’re thinking about learning to ride or upgrading your licence, I genuinely wouldn’t go anywhere else. 10/10 experience and the perfect start to my big bike journey. A huge thank you to Gemma and especially Matt – you’ve both been brilliant! Dom B.

I did my CBT with Shires and they were fantastic. I then went on to do my direct access and passed my MOD 1 and 2 first time with Jon as my instructor. He was incredibly helpful and a great teacher, he would go on to explain things in further detail if needed and made me feel really confident comfortable with riding. I would highly recommend anyone to do their DAS with them!

Brilliant! Really went from 0 to hero. Both me and my Fiancé decided this year to get our license together with zero bike experience so we went with the Direct Access Course and it was perfect. The team really are excellent instructors! Learning was engaging and fun! After the fantastic training we passed both our Mod 1 and 2 first try. Can’t thank the team enough! Highly recommend to anyone at any level thinking to get their license.

And especially to the lovely lady that I spoke to for ages on the phone Gemma Thankyou I am so grateful for your advice and help. And not letting me give up. And Jack who my trainer was. Absolutely fantastic! Recommended by a friend and now recommended by myself too! I started from 0 experience on a bike, did the CBT and once passed decided I wanted to go for the DAS course. If you live in or near Peterborough choosing Shires should be a no-brainer! If you live an hour away like myself, I would still recommend making the commute if you have access to a car to use Shires. Shires will provide you with a jacket, gloves, helmet and bike hire included in the price. You can use your own helmet if you have a SENA intercom installed on it, otherwise you will need to use one of theirs. The routes they take you round cover a good mixture of country roads, busy town/city driving, residential/school zones and main roads/dual carriage ways. I live near Cambridge, the price for Shires was comparable, if not slightly cheaper than CamRider and other Cambridge based riding schools. HOWEVER... You get much more for your money from Shires. You get 2 full days of training and extra training on each of your test days before you take your test, totalling 4 days. In comparison CamRider wanted more money for less time riding/learning and... For MOD1, on the day of your test Shires hire out the ACTUAL test centre so you get to practise the drills on the test centre track before taking the test. I cannot recommend this enough!! I haven't seen any other local schools that do this. All of the instructors and staff are super friendly and very knowledgable! I would highly recommend that if you have never ridden a bike you do the CBT course before booking your A2/DAS course. Expenses to consider for A2/DAS: You will need your own riding trousers and motorcycle boots to complete MOD1 and MOD2. Thank you to everyone at Shires for providing such a positive and friendly introduction to the motorcycle world!

Absolute 5* experience from first contact with Gemma (and communication throughout), she listened to my needs and just got the job done.. no messing about, she knew exactly what I needed to do and guided me through the entire process from cbt, bike theory, through lessons with the instructors to mod 1 and 2 completion. Cant thank her enough for just getting it sorted without any fuss or obfuscation. The instructors are all fantastic guys, all different, all a great laugh but seriously good at what they do. I got a few different styles of teaching, all with their own benefits so the stuff actually went in.. and coming from not being on a bike for over 30 years (and even then it was just a bit of messing around on mates bikes on private land), and being a bit of a numpty for remembering stuff and actually getting my brain to understand what I needed it to do differently from driving a van, they still actually managed to get me through the tests.. no one more surprised than myself, although they weren't... Just got to get used to the bike I bought for a month, and next payday it will be the ERS enhanced course (with Shires) to get a good brush up since passing. Value wise I cant find fault with any of it, especially considering the bikes and maintenance, fuel costs, insurance for a numpty like me wobbling around (initially) on a 650, insurance for those guys, their bikes, their fuel, their expertise, the admin costs, premises rent, cbt practice area rent, helmets, gloves, jackets etc.. 50 quid an hour... the mechanic I take my van to charges more than that to do the brake pads.... All told a fantastic experience, highly recommended.. and lastly a special mention for Dave the dvsa examiner... what a sound bloke.. thanks Dave 👍

I would highly recommend Shires. It really is a fantastic training school with friendly staff and really knowledgeable instructors. In the space of 2 months I went from having minimal experience on a motorcycle, to passing my CBT, MOD 1 and MOD 2 tests for my full A licence! Unfortunately, I didn't pass my MOD 2 first time round, but I was successful on re-test a couple of weeks later. On the morning of my re-test I had a 45 minute training ride just before the test, and this was instrumental in helping me pass. It settled my nerves and although my riding on the training ride wasn't perfect, I received really useful feedback from my instructor on the day (John), and this info was then fresh in my mind for the test itself. Thanks again to all the team at Shires!
