5.0 / 5 · 10 totalI completed my Compulsory Basic Training with ORMT Perry Barr on Monday, 20 July 2026, with Jay as my instructor. Jay was punctual, well-mannered, patient and clearly passionate about teaching. His more than 30 years of motorcycle-riding experience were evident throughout the day, particularly in his ability to explain each exercise calmly and clearly. As someone with no previous motorcycle-riding experience, I found Jay’s teaching style extremely helpful. He made the controls and mechanics of the motorcycle easy to understand and explained everything in a way that was accessible to a complete beginner. His clear instructions, encouragement and patient approach gave me the confidence to ride without feeling rushed or placed under unnecessary pressure. The CBT had originally been scheduled to begin at 9:00 am. However, ORMT contacted me more than 24 hours in advance to move the start time to 7:30 am. This was a very considerate decision, as temperatures above 27°C had been forecast during the period in which we would have been completing the on-road element. The training area was clean, organised and safe. The motorcycles and scooters were modern, clean and clearly well maintained, which contributed to a professional and reassuring learning environment. I began the day learning on a manual motorcycle. When the time came to decide whether I was ready for the on-road section, I made the decision to switch to an automatic scooter. This was not due to any shortcomings in the instruction I received. I was simply overthinking the gear-changing process and wanted to ensure that I went onto the road feeling confident and fully aware of my own ability. Jay was entirely supportive of my decision. He emphasised the importance of recognising my own limitations and making a responsible choice before riding on public roads. He also explained that confidence and understanding do not necessarily develop in a single day and, although some people may progress more quickly, these skills often improve through continued practice and experience. Jay recommended that I return for a gear-conversion course to build my confidence and become more comfortable riding a manual motorcycle, which I intend to do. I successfully completed and passed my CBT. Overall, I had a very positive experience with ORMT Perry Barr. Jay was professional, knowledgeable, encouraging and exceptionally patient throughout the day. I would confidently recommend ORMT, particularly to new or nervous riders looking for a supportive and experienced instructor.
I did my cbt here a few months ago, kept intending to write a review but forgetting. I had Jay as my instructor on the day and he was absolutely amazing, very understanding of mistakes and good at adapting his teaching to different people's needs. Highly recommend this place and looking forwards to taking my DAS here soon(tm) when finances allow, well worth the travel from staffordshire. p.s. I remember to actually turn my indicator off now Jay :)
Excellent instructor. Passed my CBT first time!
Right, let me set the scene: a 4'11" woman who'd never sat on a motorbike or scooter in her life, fairly convinced she'd spend the CBT day toppling over at every traffic light because her feet barely reach the ground.I did not topple. Not even once. That's down to Jay. The man has the patience of a saint and somehow made me believe I could do this. He paced everything beautifully, never rushed me, and never once made me feel like the tiny nervous one holding everyone up. Then halfway through he pulled me aside and basically said, "I reckon you're ready for the road". And the funny thing is, I was calm as anything and completely up for it, someone should've filed a missing persons report for the nerves I was supposed to have. Anyway I passed first time. Still not over it!! In fact, I've not stopped going on about it and the 19yr old SIA-trained security guard at my building heard me singing Jay's praises and immediately asked me to send over Jay's details so he could book his own CBT. That's the effect this man has, one happy customer and suddenly the whole building wants to ride. So here's my message to the ladies: if you've been umming and ahhing about whether you can do this. YES YOU CAN! If a 4'11" first-timer can sail through, you've got this in the bag. Stop scrolling and book it. Ask for Jay. He'll have you riding off into the sunset feeling like an absolute legend, foot-on-the-ground anxiety and all. Thank you, Jay! You've created a monster. I'll be back with my GROM for the gear conversion course!
I’d like to thank my instructor, Jason, for his support and clear explanations. I attended the CBT class on Thursday and successfully got my CBT certificate thanks to his help. I highly recommend this place to others, especially those who may have language difficulties, as the instructors use clear communication and helpful gestures to make everything easy to understand.
Just done my cbt here and planning to do my full bike license here instructor was very helpful and respectful an learnt a lot of stuff I didn’t know before thanks to jay 👌🏽 I’ve been to other cbt centres n this is definitely the best
recently passed my bike licence and Jay was a massive help throughout the whole process. His teaching was brilliant from start to finish — really clear, patient, and easy to understand. He made everything feel less stressful and gave me loads of confidence on the bike. Jay explains things properly and makes sure you’re fully ready before moving on, which really helped me improve quickly. If you’re thinking about learning to ride or doing your licence, I highly recommend Jay. Great instructor and a top guy!
